Brian Flaspohler, a baseball historian, claims that the first professional game played in St. Louis was May 4, 1875. St. Louis won but lost. The St. Louis Brown Stockings beat the St. Louis Red Stockings by 15 to 9. To create the first professional baseball team in St. Louis, out-of-town ringers were hired. These ringers founded the Brown Stockings. The Red Stockings were an amateur team made up of unprofessional, scrappy players who weren’t happy that there wasn’t one St. Louis player on the city’s first professional team. Flaspohler said that the Cardinals would be around forever. They weren’t even the first major league team that visited St. Louis.

But, he has a problem with historians.
